I decided to take the plunge into the newest iPhone firmware, version 2.2, shortly after the QuickPWN announcement was made. It’s getting surprisingly simple to Jailbreak these days, and the releases of QuickPWN are coming out quicker after each official release from Apple.
One thing you should consider doing is hooking into the social media scene using sites like Twitter or Brightkite to follow people with similar quests. Twitter users will find that standalone apps like Tweetdeck to follow posts that are specific to the iPhone update. This way, you will get insights from others about their experiences before you attempt to go it alone. You’ll be surprised about the support you can receive from complete strangers by just asking for help.
My story includes a couple of twists. First, an upgrade to iTunes was necessary before downloading the latest firmware. Somehow, the upgrade lost the ability to connect to Quicktime and as a result would not start. So I had to track down a copy of Quicktime to install. First hint: if you have the same issue, Apple will point you to the iTunes download in order to get Quicktime. As I just said, it failed the first time I upgraded, so after making sure it still failed a second time, I Googled a standalone Quicktime and was able to get iTunes working as a result.
Next, I plugged in my iPhone and let iTunes do the firmware download and install. Almost immediately after the phone went into restore mode, iTunes locked up and I had to start over from scratch. Second time’s a charm though, and I was quickly on my way to pushing the firmware down to my device.
The rest of the story is pretty uneventful, so if you decide to stop reading, here is a good point to go read something else.
After the firmware upgrade, a restore from previous backup was performed, taking up the majority of my nearly 2 hour long upgrade.
Finally, I ran QuickPWN, and PRESTO!, within 2 minutes I was off and running with a fully upgraded and Jailbroken iPhone version 2.2.
So remember, kids, don’t give up no matter what happens. With a little determination and a lot of persistence, you too can Jailbreak your iPhone.
